New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wins historic re-election

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wins historic re-electionParliamentary elections were held in New Zealand on Saturday. Current Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's Labour Party won a historic majority and will form the next government.

New Zealand has a parliamentary system like India. During elections, whichever party wins the most seats forms the government. Elections are held once every 3 years.

The Labour Party got 64 seats and a straight majority. New Zealand's national assembly has 120 seats in total.

This majority will allow Ardern to form the first single-party government since New Zealand adopted a proportional voting system in 1996. For the last three years, The Labour Party had formed a government in coalition with the Green Party and the New Zealand First party.

The opposition National Party won 26.8% of the votes - 35 seats.

The election was originally supposed to be held in September but was postponed by a month due to a new COVID-19 wave.

Ardern was expected to win a second term due to her strong handling of the COVID-19 crisis, a terrorist attack and other issues. She has also been praised worldwide for her actions.
