Nine deer in Nara, Japan die after eating plastic bagsNara is a popular spot for tourists in Japan.

It is one of the oldest parks in Japan
 	It has many temples and shrines
 	It is home to over 1000 free-roaming deer
 	Sika deer, which are protected by law, are found in Nara Park

Recently, 9 deer that died there had plastic waste in their stomachs.

Visitors are allowed to feed the deer only special sugar-free snacks without plastic packaging
 	However, it is now thought that some visitors may have fed the deer other snacks
 	At times, food wrappers and plastic bags are thrown on the island which the deer may have eaten
 	The deer smell the bags and eat them thinking that it is food

The Nara Deer Preservation Foundation launched a cleaning campaign on Wednesday.

Volunteers and animal lovers took part in a clean-up of the park
 	They collected a lot of plastic waste
 	More signs will be set up in the park to warn tourists about the dangers of leaving plastic behind and feeding the animals wrong food
