A bird called a bar-tailed godwit was tracked flying more than 12,000 km from Alaska in the US to New Zealand. It has set a new world record for the longest non-stop flight by a bird.

It's non-stop flight lasted for 11 days straight from south-west Alaska to Auckland, New Zealand. Its speed was about 88 km per hour.

The previous longest recorded non-stop flight by a bird was an 11,680 km flight by a female bar-tailed godwit in 2007.

The record-breaking bird is a male godwit known as 4BBRW. A tracking device was attached to it. It allowed scientists to use satellites to track its flight.

Bar-tailed godwits make this journey from Alaska to New Zealand every season. They, then, stay in New Zealand for a while and start the return flight to Alaska in March.

Male bar-tailed godwits make their internal organs smaller to be lighter while flying.

Migratory birds (that move from place to place) have the amazing ability to know exactly where they are while flying. They can fly over open oceans for days and still arrive at the right place.

It is believed the birds do not sleep on the journey during which they flap their wings most of the time. Probably that is what makes the non-stop flight possible!
