NSSO’s draft report on employment levels in India

National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) released the survey report on India’s unemployment status. NSSO data on employment shows that the unemployment in India has reached a four-decade high.

The rate of unemployment among the rural males in the age group of 15 to 29 years is estimated to be 17.4% in 2017-18 as compared to 5% in 2011-12.
 	The unemployment rate of rural female youths are at 13.6% compared to 4.8% in 2011-12.
 	The survey states that the unemployment levels are as low as what those were in 1972-73.
 	The government said that the final report was yet to be approved and the current one is draft report. 
 	There is disagreement between National Statistical Commission (NSC) and the Government around the data and the draft report.

National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) is responsible for conducting large scale sample surveys in diverse fields Pan India. It is under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI). Primary data is collected through nationwide household surveys on various socio-economic subjects.
 	National Statistical Commission ( NSC) was set up under the recommendation of Rangarajan committee on June 2005. Commission is formed to evolve policies, priorities and standards in statistical matters. The NSC has four members besides a Chairperson, each, having specialisation and experience in specified statistical fields.
