On 30 December, a day before his retirement, he was appointed as India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

The upper age limit for the CDS has been fixed at 65 years. However, Gen. Rawat's tenure has not been announced yet.
 	Prime Minister Narendra Modi had first announced the creation of the post of CDS on Independence Day this year.

Who is Gen. Rawat?

Gen. Rawat was the Army Chief from December 2015 to December 2019.
 	He was commissioned into the 5/11 Gorkha Rifles in December 1978.
 	He hails from Uttarakhand and is the son of former Vice Chief of Army Lt Gen Lakshman Singh Rawat.

What are the role and responsibilities of the CDS?

The CDS will be a four-star General and function as the Principal Military Adviser to the Defence Minister and also as the Permanent Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC).
 	The CDS will head the new Department of Military Affairs in the Defence Ministry and function as a Secretary to Government.
 	The CDS will also be part of several committees including the Defence Acquisition Council.
