People protest against Citizenship Amendment Act across the country

People protest against Citizenship Amendment Act across the countryWe have read about the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) and the protests against it. As the bill has been signed by the President, now, it is referred to as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

There have been many protests by people across the country against the CAA.

In Delhi and Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh), there have been strong protests by students of Jamia Millia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) respectively. The protests, happening since the weekend, have been opposed by the police and students have been arrested and also injured.
 	Students of institutions across the country in Pune, Delhi, Mumbai, Benaras, Patna, Chennai, Kolkata and many more are protesting today against the CAA as well as in support of the students of Jamia University and AMU, who have been arrested or detained.
 	There have also been incidents of public disorder and vehicles have been destroyed.
 	Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal also carried out a rally today, speaking against the CAA.
 	In Kerala, senior political leaders across parties, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, also organised a rally against the CAA.

What is the Citizenship Amendment Act?

This law allows non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, who entered India illegally, to become citizens.
 	The government says the law is meant to provide citizenship to non-Muslims who are persecuted in the three countries.
 	However, critics say that it is anti-Muslim and unconstitutional as Indian citizenship is not based on religion.
 	Northeastern states like Assam and Tripura, which are on the border with Bangladesh, also fear that the law will allow outsiders to come in and eventually take over their states and identity.
