In recent years, Peru has become the world’s largest exporter of blueberries. This comes after having virtually no blueberry plantations just a decade ago.

• One of the blueberry farms in Peru is Sunberries Field, located in the south of the country.
• Alvaro Espinoza, an agricultural engineer and owner of Sunberries Field, had faced difficulties getting investment from Peruvian businesspeople.
• The belief was that blueberries could not be grown in Peru’s coastal heat.
• However, he persevered and became successful.
• Peru is now the world’s third-largest blueberry producer, behind only China and the US.
• Peru sends lots of blueberries to other countries and made more than 1 billion dollars selling them last year!
• The success of the blueberry industry in Peru is attributed to the country’s ability to fill the gap in the global market for blueberries.
• Particularly from September to November, which was only partially being filled by Argentina and Uruguay.
• The country also offers a flat, hot coastal region that is closer to ports.
• Blueberries from Peru are now in demand overtaking former best-selling crops such as mandarins, grapes, mangos and avocados.
