Polar bear in zoo receives “promotion” from the Canadian Army

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

The Canadian Army has an unusual member among its soldiers –  a polar bear named Juno!

Juno the polar bear lives at the Toronto Zoo in Canada. She was born on 11 November 2015. 11 November is celebrated as Remembrance Day in Canada. This day honours military veterans (ex-soldiers).

Polar bears are the Canadian Army’s official mascot. So, given her birthdate, the army adopted Juno as an honorary soldier.

She was initially given the lowest soldier rank of honorary “Private” and then, a “Corporal”. Now, five years after she was born, Juno has been promoted to the rank of “Honorary Master Corporal”.

Of course, Juno does not train or fights in wars. An honorary membership means one does not actually participate in the activities.

Juno also has two brothers, Hudson and Humphrey. They act as “Arctic ambassadors” for polar bears around the world. They help spread awareness about climate change and its impact on nature.
