President Kovind confers Bal Shakti Puraskar on 49 children

President Kovind confers Bal Shakti Puraskar on 49 childrenOn 22 January, President Ram Nath Kovind conferred (presented) the Bal Shakti Puraskar on 49 children of the country.

The award is also known as Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar.

What is the Bal Shakti Puraskar?

The award recognizes children who have outstanding achievements in the fields of innovation, scholastic achievements, social service, arts & culture, sports and bravery.
 	It was previously known as the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement. It is India's highest civilian honour for exceptional (extraordinary) children under the age of 18.

Who are some of this year's recipients?

Ishaan Sharma, who saved a Russian tourist from two robbers.
 	Omkar Singh, who holds the world record for the youngest theoretical author.
 	Gauri Mishra, who is the youngest pianist in India.
 	Darsh Malani, who has performed over 50 magic shows worldwide.
 	Korok Biswas, a dancer with Down syndrome and 50% intellectual disability received the award for art and culture.
 	In the bravery category, Lalkansung, who saved three girls from drowning in a pond in Manipur, and Pema, who saved two girls when the boundary wall of her school collapsed in heavy rain, were awarded.
