President Kovind nominates former CJI Ranjan Gogoi to Rajya Sabha

President Kovind nominates former CJI Ranjan Gogoi to Rajya SabhaOn Monday, President Ram Nath Kovind nominated former CJI (Chief Justice of India) Ranjan Gogoi to the Rajya Sabha.

He has been nominated to the seat that senior advocate K.T.S. Tulsi vacated when he retired in February 2020.

CJI Gogoi retired in November last year.
 	He was the Chief Justice of India from October 2018 to November 2019.
 	During his tenure, CJI Gogoi headed benches that presided over the Ayodhya verdict as well as a review on the Sabarimala temple case which referred the matter to a 7-judge bench and more.

How does the President of India nominate members to the Rajya Sabha?

A while ago, we read that elections are scheduled to be held for 56 seats in the Rajya Sabha.
 	The Rajya Sabha has a maximum of 250 members. While members of state legislative assemblies elect most of the members, the President has the power to nominate 12 members.
 	The President nominates citizens who are authorities in different fields such as literature, science, art, social service and sports.
 	Through this, the government recognises their merit and also ensures that they can use their knowledge in the service of the country.
 	Currently, some nominated Rajya Sabha members include Raghunath Mohapatra (Art), Narendra Jadhav (Economics), Mary Kom (Sports) and more.
 	Nominated members serve for a term of 6 years.
