President swears in Bimal Julka as new Chief Information Commissioner

President swears in Bimal Julka as new Chief Information CommissionerToday, President Ram Nath Kovind appointment current Information Commissioner Bimal Julka as the new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).

President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office to Mr Julka at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan today.
 	Mr Julka will now head the Central Information Commission.
 	He is a former Information and Broadcasting Secretary and former IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer.

What is the Central Information Commission (also called CIC)?

CIC is an independent body, set up under the Right to Information Act, 2005.
 	It acts upon complaints from those individuals who have not been able to submit information requests to a Central Public Information Officer or State Public Information Officer.
 	This means it investigates into complaints and appeals regarding offices, public sector undertakings, financial institutions etc., which are under the government.
 	The CIC has an important role to play in maintaining transparency in the system of governance in India.

Who selects and appoints its members?

The commission has 11 members including the chief information commissioner,
 	The President of India appoints the CIC members on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the Prime Minister as chairperson, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and other select union cabinet ministers.
 	However, currently, the commission has only 6 members including Mr Julka.
