Raja Chari : First spacewalk on ISS!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Raja Chari, an Indian-born astronaut, completed his first spacewalk and installed new solar panels on the International Space Station. On March 15, Raja Chari and Kayla Barron completed a six-hour, 54-minute spacewalk. First-ever spacewalk for Raja Chari and the second time for Kayla Barron.

Education

Raja Chari graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Astronautical Engineering. In addition, he earned a master’s degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

International Space Station and Raja Chari!

In 2020, Raja Chari was chosen as the commander of the Crew-3 mission to the International Space Station. He was launched to the space station in 2021. Raja Chari has flown more than 2,500 hours in his job. He is serving as the commander of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-3 mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

What are Solar Arrays?

The solar array holds all of the solar panels that receive and convert sunlight into electricity.

Purpose of the spacewalk!

NASA planned to put six ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays on the space station. The aim is to use the sun’s energy to make electricity for different research and science projects. As more people want to do experiments and go to space, new panels will be added to the old station. This will give it a much-needed boost in electricity. They will make the station’s total power available go from 160 kilowatts to 215 kilowatts.
