Ranthambore tigers increase, approach human settlements!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

The population of tigers in the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve has increased by 45% in the last 8 years. The Ranthambore reserve had 59 tigers in the year 2014. Now, there are 86 tigers in the area of 1,334 square kilometres of the Ranthambore Reserve.

The population of Ranthambore Tigers increase

  • With 86 tigers, Ranthambore Tiger Reserve has become the third most congested habitat for big cats or tigers in India after Corbett National Park and Kaziranga National Park.
  • The officials at the RTR said that a dozen of adult tigers have moved to the periphery of the reserve as they do not have any marked territory.
  • The reason is the increasing crowd in their habitat.
  • As a result, the tigers are moving close to human habitats.
  • The Field Director at Ranthambore Reserve stated that since the tigers do not have a marked territory, they have been of concern to the officials.
  • The tigers are dominant animals and they don’t let any other feline in their area.
    • Mr Yadav says some of the tigers in the periphery area are those who have been pushed out by the stronger tigers.
    • It would be dangerous if the tigers moved out of the area.
    • They could harm human habitats.  A few measures to control the tigers are:
  • Directions for monitoring the animals have been issued.
    • Installing cameras to keep an eye on the movements of the feline animals.
    • Relocating tigers to other reserves is also a suggestion as per the forest officials.

Hello! My name is Nivrithi. I think they should chip the tigers to monitor their movement, or keep rangers armed with tranquilizers watching the tigers 24/7, then if a tiger gets too close to the human habitat, they can be tranquilized and moved.
