Rare moonflower cactus from Amazon blooms for just 12 hours

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Have you ever read about a rare flower called the moonflower cactus? It is a type of cactus found only in the Amazon rainforest. It blooms only at night. This flower is related to another flower called Queen of the night.

Recently, a moonflower bloomed for the first time at Cambridge University in Britain.  It is the only moonflower that is being grown in Britain.

This amazing event was captured lived on video and watched by thousands of people around the world.

However, an unusual thing was that this flower actually started blooming by afternoon, when the Sun was still shining.

When the moonflower cactus bloomed, it gave out a sweet-smelling scent. But the flower died by morning.

This plant usually grows by tying itself around another larger tree. This helps it to stay above water when the Amazon river floods.
