Listen to the news

We celebrate this day on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, also popularly known as the ‘Iron Man of India‘.

What is the Statue of Unity?

The Statue of Unity is a huge 182-metre statue dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Kevadia, Gujarat. It is the world’s tallest statue and is a major tourist attraction.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Born on 31 October 1875, Sardar Patel was an Indian leader and freedom fighter. He played an instrumental role in India’s struggle for independence.
Sardar Patel also played an important role in unifying India after Independence. Hence, this day honours his efforts. He was Independent India’s first Home Minister as well as first Deputy Prime Minister.

Celebrations on National Unity Day

The government and other organisations organise many programmes including a ‘Run for Unity‘ on this day. Prime Minister Modi will present a speech as well. The government also presents the Sardar Patel National Unity awards on National Unity Day. It awards citizens who have contributed to the unity of India.

This year, the Statue of Unity in Gujarat will remain closed for visitors between 28 October and 1 November 1 to mark the celebrations.
