ReCharkha upcycles plastics into reusables

As the amount of waste generated by each person could go up to 4 kgs per day, with a growing population of 7.2 billion, waste management plays an important role in our lives. Amita Deshpande realised the importance of climate and she felt she should do something about it. In the early 90s, she presented a school project on waste management when the topic was hardly spoken about.

As a youngster, she would love to go on treks and always wondered if she could do something about the garbage we often see on the mountains or adventurous places. Not to wait for a miracle in life, she began to practice plastic-free habits as a discipline and would always refuse to carry or take plastic bags.

After working in an IT company for some years an incident made her start ReCharka. She was stuck in one of the villages in the Himalayas due to landslides and noticed that there was a huge gap between what was sent to the villagers as emergency supplies and what they actually wanted.

After working as a consultant for waste management activities, the journey of ReCharkha started in Pune. ReCharkha works on a simple model, collect plastics, wash – sanitise – dry and upcycle them into different products. She has a team of dedicated locals who help her in her efforts.

Convincing people to buy expensive products from waste is not easy but Amita is not someone who gives up easily. Take out a few seconds and check out the wonderful products, truly remarkable and inspiring.
