What is Pegasus?

It is a spyware. Spyware is a type of computer software that aims to secretly find information about a person or organization. This is done by installing the software on a phone or laptop. An Israeli technology company called the NSO Group developed Pegasus to be used on mobile phones. Pegasus allows the installer to keep a check on all messages, calls and internet searches that the phone user receives or makes. It can also keep track of the location of the phone.
What is the controversy?
NSO Group has made the rule that it will allow only governments or government agencies to use the Pegasus. And it is meant for use only against terrorists and serious criminals.

However, now, a global investigative report has come out that Pegasus spyware may have been used to spy secretly on many people across the world. In India, they found that it could have been used to keep a check on 300 mobile phone numbers. These numbers belong to important Indian ministers, politicians, as well as many journalists and business persons.

It is not confirmed if they were spied on. But, if this is true, then, it is a violation of their fundamental rights and freedoms. On being questioned, the Indian government has denied that it had anything to do with Pegasus. So, now the opposition parties and other concerned people want the government to probe this issue.
