T-cell cure to cancer

Researchers discover the immune cell that may cure cancer

Recommended for Research

4 February is marked as World Cancer Day every year. You have already read about the 3 year  ‘I am and I will’ campaign that began in 2018.  The year 2020 marks the midway point of the campaign. Cancer is a dangerous disease and it is important to spread awareness about it.

In new research which may revolutionise science, scientists have discovered an immune cell that might be able to cure the different types of cancers.

  • Researchers at Cardiff University, UK have found a T-cell inside people’s blood that can find and kill cancer cells.
  • The T-cell is an immune cell. The immune system is made up of cells and proteins that help the body fight infections and illness.
  • The research discovered that the T-cell carries a ‘receptor’ that helps them see or identify cancer cells.
  • The great thing is that the T-cell only attacks cancer cells without harming normal cells and tissues.
  • It is still early to start testing this cure on human patients. The research was done on animals and on cells in the laboratory.
  • In the laboratory, researches have shown that the T-cell can cure different types of cancers, such as lung, colon, breast, blood, skin, kidney, cervical cancer.

How does the T-cell identify cancer cells?

  • MR1 is a molecule that is found on the surface of every cell in the human body.
  • The receptor of the T-cell interacts with the MR1. Experts believe that the MR1 communicates with the body’s immune system to catch or ‘flag’ the cancerous cells.

The findings of this research have been published in the journal Nature Immunology. We hope that this study soon can be used on human patients to help cure cancer.
