Researchers find deepest point on land under Antarctic ice

Researchers find deepest point on land under Antarctic iceResearchers have now found the deepest point on land, on Earth. It is on the continent of Antarctica, buried under ice.

It is 3.5 kilometres below sea level, under the Denman Glacier in East Antarctica.

The research was conducted by glaciologists (scientists who specialise in studying about ice and glaciers) at the University of California, US.
 	Scientists found that the trough under the glacier went far deeper than they could've imagined.
 	It is about 3.5 km deep, but there is no ocean water there. The trough is about 100 kilometres in length and 20 kilometres wide.
 	As per the previous studies, the canyon was supposed to be shallow.
 	But the new study has uncovered its real depth using the latest technology called BedMachine.
 	The depth was calculated by the amount of ice that filled the trough and the law of conservation of mass.

These new findings will help scientists better predict the impact of climate change on the frozen continent.
