Robot pets are becoming friends of the elderly

Robot pets are becoming friends of the elderlyAs the world continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing has become an important tool for prevention.

However, this time is especially hard for many elderly people who live in nursing homes (old age homes that provide healthcare). Older people have higher chances of getting COVID-19. So, in the United States, many nursing and old age homes have stopped relatives and friends from visiting.

In order to make it less lonely for the elderly, authorities are providing elderly residents of nursing homes with robotic pets.

These robotic pets are manufactured by robotic pet manufacturer Ageless Innovation. They are called Joy for All Companion Pets.  These robotic pets feel, look and sound like real pets. They are also easier to take care of than real pets.

New York was the first state to test out the pets. They found that 70% of participants reported feeling less lonely after one year.
