Now, French scientists are helping a paralysed man to walk again, using a mind-controlled exoskeleton (robotic structure) suit.

A man named Thibault injured his spinal cord and got paralysed (unable to move any part of his body).
 	In 2017, he participated in the exoskeleton trial with Clinatec (Bio-medical Research Center) at the University of Grenoble in France.
 	He first started practising using brain implants to control a character in a computer game.
 	Thibault then moved on to walking in the robotic suit and is now able to move and control his arm movement with it.

How does the robotic exoskeleton work?

Firstly, scientists plant implants on the parts of the brain surface that control movement.
 	Sixty-four electrodes on each implant read the brain activity and send instructions to a nearby computer.
 	Then, computer software reads the brainwaves and turns them into instructions for controlling the exoskeleton.
 	After that, a person is placed in the exoskeleton and the person can move according to what he is thinking.

The details of the exoskeleton have been published in The Lancet Neurology journal.

An exoskeleton is an external skeleton that supports and protects a body, in contrast to the internal skeleton (that we humans have). It can perform many roles such as protection, support, feeding and more.
