Rohit Sharma among 4 athletes to receive Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2020The National Sports Awards selection committee has recommended 4 recipients for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award this year. The names were announced yesterday.

They are, cricketer Rohit Sharma, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, table tennis player Manika Batra and Paralympic high jumper M Thangavelu. The Paralympic Games are the Olympic Games for athletes with disabilities.

The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, officially known as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in Sports and Games, is the highest sporting honour of India. The award is named after Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India (from 1984 to 1989). It is awarded every year by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

This is only the second time that 4 athletes will be receiving the award. It is usually presented to only one sportsperson per year.

Rohit Sharma will also be the fourth cricketer to receive the award. The other three are Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.

The award will be presented on 29 August, which is National Sports Day. The Dronacharya and Dhayan Chand Award for sports will also be presented on the same occasion.

Generally, the awards are presented at the Rashtrapati Bhavan by the President of India. However, this year, due to COVID-19, the ceremony will be held online.
