Russia no longer to be part of UNHRC!

Recommended for Middle Grades

As a result of accusations of “severe and persistent violations and human rights violations” in Ukraine, the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday voted out Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Russia was two years into a three-year tenure.

United Nations Human Rights Council!

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a United Nations institution tasked with the protection of civilians’ rights around the world. Each year, the body gathers at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva to discuss human rights issues and circumstances that develop throughout the world.

The UNHRC is made up of a president and four vice-presidents, each representing one of the five regional groups (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Eastern European, Latin America and Caribbean, Western European and other states). In line with the Council’s annual cycle, they each serve for a year.

The voting process behind the ban!

As part of the voting process, the United Nations General Assembly needs two-thirds of the votes in favour of a decision. In the total votes, member countries that do not vote are not accounted for.

Thus, in the United States-led initiative, 93 votes were in favour, 24 countries voted against and 58 countries did not vote.

How often does this happen?

There have been a few suspensions.  In 2018 US had stepped back from the Human Rights Council as it believed that the Human Rights Council lacked transparency and was biased toward Israel.

In 2021, the United States was re-elected to the council for a second term. Protests against Muammar Gaddafi’s regime led to the suspension of Libya in 2011.

India chose to not vote!

Indian Ambassador to the UN stated that the Russia Ukraine crisis has also had an effect outside of the region, with rising food and energy prices for many developing countries.

This is India’s eighth time voting “no” on resolutions against Moscow, which represents a neutral stance on the Ukraine situation.
