Sahitya Akademi announces Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2019The Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Prahlad Singh Patel announced the Sahitya Akademi’s Bal Sahitya Puraskar and Yuva Puraskar awards for the year 2019.

22 writers were selected for Bal Sahitya Puraskar and 23 writers were selected for the Yuva Puraskar.
 	Bal Sahitya Puraskar is given to authors for their contribution to children's literature in 24 Indian languages.
 	Yuva Puraskar award is given to outstanding* writers below the age of 35.

How are the awardees selected?

The books published between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2017 are considered for the awards.
 	The awardees are selected on the basis of recommendations made by the Jury*.
 	The jury comprises of three members each in the concerned language.
 	The Award is in the form of a casket* containing an engraved* copper-plaque* and a cheque of ₹50,000.

The Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters, is an organisation dedicated to the promotion of literature in the languages of India.

It was founded by the government of India in 1954. It promotes literary activities in 24 Indian languages, including English.

*Plaque: An ornamental plate or tablet

*Casket: A small, decorative box, especially one used to keep jewellery in

*Jury: A group of people chosen to decide the winner of a competition

*Engraved: To cut words, pictures, or patterns into the surface of metal, stone, etc

*Outstanding: Excellent/ better than everything or everyone else
