Saudi Green Initiative – Arabian Leopard Program!

Recommended for Secondary Grades

The Arabian Leopard is a beautiful animal that lives in Saudi Arabia. It is also a mysterious and very important animal. The Arabian Leopard, on the other hand, is “critically endangered,” according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

It is thought that there are less than 200 leopards left on the Arabian Peninsula. Arabian Leopards are most likely to live in the mountains of Oman. In Saudi Arabia, the animal is close to going extinct.

This is because people and the animals it hunts have been killing the leopards for hundreds of years. The Arabian Leopard Program is starting to change all of this, though.

Fun facts about Arabian Leopard Program!

  • The program is run by the Royal Commission for AlUla(RCU), and due to their efforts, the authorities have been able to breed sixteen leopards so far.
  • The Arabian Leopard Program’s most recent success was the birth of a cub in April 2021.
  • The ultimate goal of the Arabian Leopard Program initiative is to move the Arabian leopard out of the list of threatened species.
  • The program works with Panthera, a global conservation organisation that works to protect the seven species of large wild cats on Earth.
  • The initiative believes that saving endangered species like the Arabian leopard is important for protecting our planet and keeping the balance of nature in our ecosystem.
  • There are nearly  18,000 wildlife experts and conservationists that work at the RCU from all over the world.
  • The leopard programme is considered to be the most important of a number of green projects that are being done all over the UAE to restore and protect the balance of nature.

Saudi Green Initiative!

The Saudi Green Initiative hopes to bring back wild animals that are considered endangered. As part of this initiative:

  • habitats that have been damaged by livestock overgrazing will be fixed.
  • large areas of desertification will be stopped.
  • there will be a huge increase in the number and size of protected areas.

Saudi Arabia made its first protected conservation area in 1986. It is a reserve that is more than 13,000 square kilometres. It is now home to many important animals, such as the Arabian wolf, the red fox, the sand fox, the striped hyena and many others.
