Delhi air pollution nears emergency level

Recommended for Middle Grades

While air pollution is a constant problem in Delhi and neighbouring cities, the air quality has gotten much worse since Diwali.

The air quality index (AQI) in Delhi was 473 on 13 November, which comes under the severe category. It is expected to get even worse over the next few days. At this level, the air pollution will affect even healthy people while making it much worse for people who are already ill.

India’s Central Pollution Control Board has ordered states and local bodies to be in “complete readiness” for emergency measures. Authorities have asked people in the city to try not to step outdoors if they can and requested offices to cut vehicle use by at least 30%.

Emergency meeting

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called an emergency meeting today to tackle discuss the issue after the Supreme Court asked authorities to take immediate measures. Kejriwal announced that schools in Delhi will be closed from Monday.

The Supreme Court also suggested to the Centre that there could be a two-day lockdown to bring the air pollution level down.

Delhi is considered to be the most polluted capital city in the world.
