Scientists count the number of tree species on Earth.

All of us are familiar with trees, aren’t we? Trees give us oxygen and purify the environment around us. They give us shade to sit under it. We also know that there are many different kinds of trees and they grow according to the environment around them.

But do you know how many tree species are there on Earth? No! Well, scientists are trying to find the same. The estimated number of tree species discovered is about 73,300. Isn’t it huge?

Research study on tree species

A research team including Professor Marshall from Sunshine Coast’s Forest Research institute have spent 5 years compiling the world’s largest forest database. This database contains more than 44 million individual trees.

44 million is a huge count. isn’t it? This research involves more than 100 researchers.  The trees are found at more than 100,000 sites in 90 countries. And it helps scientists to calculate the total number of tree species on Earth.

The research says that this global data is of significant importance in ecology and biodiversity.

What is ecology?

Ecology is the study of organisms and how they interact with environment around them.

What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the biological variety and variability of life on Earth.

The dataset taken from all over the world is based on the identification of trees growing around the world.

Estimated tree species

As we know that 73,300 species of trees exist in the world. 9,000 species are still unidentified. The research is still going on and the scientists assume that a large proportion of the unidentified species are in South America.

For your information, it is found that South America has 43% of the tree species on the Earth. Around 8,200 rare species of trees are also found in South America.

As the research to find different trees go on, let’s take care of the trees and stay curious.
