A team of scientists has come up with a specialised air filter to 'catch and kill' SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 is the name of the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19.

How does this system work?

The system consists of a nickel-based air foam filter, which is commonly available. This filter is heated to 200 degrees Celsius.

So, when air is passed through this filter, it effectively removes and kills 99.8% of SARS-CoV-2 particles present in the air. The virus can’t survive temperatures above 70 degrees celsius.

Another experiment also showed that it killed 99.9% of anthrax spores. Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by spore-forming bacteria.

The scientists say that this specialized air filter system could be used in hospitals, schools, airports, restaurants, hotels, homes and offices. It will significantly reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19.

As schools, offices and transport are opening up, this device will come in handy. But even then, experts say it is important to maintain social distancing and wear masks.

Scientists also plan to create a portable desk-top model of the filter. This could be kept on a table next to an individual or taken to different places.
