Scientists discover a new natural phenomenon – StormquakesWe have read about natural phenomenons like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and hurricanes/typhoons.

Recently, scientists have discovered a new phenomenon in addition to the above. They are calling it 'stormquakes'.

A team of researchers at Florida State University conducted this research. They have published their findings in the scientific journal Geophysical Research Letters.

What is a 'stormquake'?

It is a combination of 'hurricanes' and 'earthquakes'.
 	Hurricanes produce really large waves on the surface of the sea which can reach deeper toward the seafloor.
 	These waves along with the seafloor produce a specific type of pressure force.
 	This pressure force then creates a hammer-like effect on the seafloor.
 	The team has named this 'hammering effect' as a stormquake.

How does one identify it?

Since they occur around magnitude 3.5 on the vector scale, their motions are minor and humans living on land can't really feel them.
 	However, they can have a major impact on marine activities, for example, if a ship is in the water.

According to the researchers, the total number of stormquakes that took place between the period 2006 and 2015 is  14,077. This means that every year thousands of stormquakes have happened.
