Scientists find white dwarf star that looks like 2 white dwarfs combined

Recommended for Middle Grades

Hey there, little star explorer! Imagine you’re up in the sky, gazing at the stars, including our very own Sun. But did you know that stars, just like our Sun, can get really tired after shining brightly for a long time?

When they use up all their special fuel called hydrogen, something amazing and funny happens! They turn into what we call “white dwarf stars.” But recently, astronomers found a super strange and huge white dwarf that made them scratch their heads in wonder!

White Dwarf Wonders!

  • White dwarfs are like tiny stars, maybe just 0.6 times the size of our Sun. They have a special outer layer made of hydrogen, helium, or a mix of helium and carbon. But never hydrogen and carbon together! Oh, how picky they are!
  • These little white dwarfs usually don’t move too fast, but the one we found, WDJ0551+4135, is like a speedy race car among its star friends. It’s zipping through space faster than 99% of the other white dwarfs nearby.
  • Normally, when two white dwarfs come together and become one big dwarf star, their combined mass should be less than 1.4 times the mass of our Sun. But not for WDJ0551+4135, it’s much heavier!
  • Now, dear little star voyager, put on your thinking cap! Scientists put all these puzzle pieces together and made a guess about what happened to the peculiar WDJ0551+4135. They think this massive white dwarf might have formed when two white dwarfs decided to have a big cosmic hug and merge together!
  • They skipped the usual explosion party called a supernova and became one large and bizarre white dwarf instead. Wow, that’s like a magical star ballet!
  • So, there you have it, my young astronomy enthusiast! Stars like our Sun can become white dwarfs after using up their hydrogen fuel. Most of these white dwarfs are small and light, but WDJ0551+4135 is a super-sized one!
  • Its atmosphere contains more hydrogen and carbon than normal, and it’s zooming through space like a speedy rocket! And the best part is, it formed through a fabulous dance of two white dwarfs becoming one, instead of causing a big supernova explosion.
  • Isn’t space just full of surprises and jokes? The universe loves to keep astronomers on their toes! So, next time you look up at the night sky and see a twinkling star, remember there’s a fascinating story behind every shimmering light. Keep exploring, my little stargazer! Who knows what other cosmic comedies are waiting to be discovered!
