SpaceX and NASA launch historic Demo-2 mission

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

After the first launch was cancelled due to bad weather, SpaceX and NASA were able to successfully launch the first human spaceflight from American soil since 2011.

At 3.22 P.M. Eastern Time on 30 May, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft successfully lifted off on a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida, US. This was SpaceX’s first human spaceflight mission.

Demo-2 is also the first human spaceflight launch by a private company (SpaceX). It has achieved something that only the government space agencies of China, Russia and the US have achieved before.

How long did they take?

Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley took 19 hours to reach their destination, the International Space Station (ISS).

They arrived at 10:16 a.m. ET Sunday morning (India time, at 7:46 p.m. on Sunday night). They were greeted by NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and Russian cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner who were already there. Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will remain there for one to four months before they return to Earth.

The success of this mission is good news for NASA’s future plans to send astronauts to the Moon and Mars. It is also a strong step towards SpaceX’s plans to take tourists to the ISS.
