Spike, the sniffer dog

Do you know what are sniffer dogs? They are dogs trained to find drugs or bombs by smelling them.

Sniffer dogs are used by the police and army to help us stay safe. They are not considered to be “pets” but as part of the police force. So, just like human soldiers, they also “retire” – this means to leave the job after working for many years.

Recently, a sniffer dog named Spike was given a warm farewell after working for 11 years in the Nashik Police in Maharashtra. He was part of the bomb detection and disposal (removal) squad.

Spike received a parade in his honour. He was placed on a police vehicle, decorated with balloons and roses. Police people walked next to the car, clapping and thanking Spike for his service.
