Sri Lankans count on Indian friends for help!
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
Hello, inquisitive reader! Guess what? Sri Lanka, a beautiful island country, is really excited about getting some special visitors. They’re counting on tourists from India to come and visit. Why? Well, it turns out that these visitors can help Sri Lanka’s economy get stronger and healthier. Isn’t that cool?
Tourist Boost: Sri Lanka’s Hope for Economic Recovery
- Right now, in the city of Colombo, they’re hosting a big convention for travel agents from India. These travel agents are the experts who help people plan their vacations. Sri Lanka wants them to bring more Indian tourists to the country in the coming years. They believe that tourism can become the biggest way for Sri Lanka to earn money from other countries.
- You see, Sri Lanka had some tough times in the past. First, there were some scary attacks in 2019 that made people scared to visit. Then, the pandemic came along and made things even worse. And just when they thought things couldn’t get any worse, there was a big financial problem. But now, things are starting to look up, and they hope that Indian tourists can help them recover.
- It seems like Indian tourists really love Sri Lanka. Even during the tough times, they kept coming to visit. In fact, in 2022, when Sri Lanka was going through its worst financial crisis, a whopping 24% of all tourists came from India! That’s a lot of people. They beat out tourists from Russia and the United Kingdom.
- So, why are Indian tourists so important? Well, because of the global recession, which means many countries are struggling financially, India and China are like the “low hanging fruits” for Sri Lanka. That means they’re the easiest countries to get tourists from. Sri Lanka is even making special efforts to improve their relationship with India and China to make sure more people come to visit.
- And guess what else? Air China has started flying between Colombo and Chengdu, a city in China, again. They’re trying to bring in more Chinese tourists too. Plus, Air India has announced daily flights between Chennai, a city in India, and Jaffna, a beautiful place in Sri Lanka. That’s going to make it even easier for Indian tourists to come over.
- So, Sri Lanka is really hoping that these Indian and Chinese tourists will come and bring lots of money to help the country. They’re even thinking about making the whole BIMSTEC area (which is a group of countries in the region) into one big tourist area. That way, they can show off all the amazing things they have to offer.
- Isn’t it funny how tourism can be so important for a country’s economy? It’s like inviting lots of friends over to have fun and spend money. Sri Lanka is really excited about the future and hopes that their new friends from India and China will come and visit soon.
