Students of Akshar school pay fees with plastic waste instead of moneyAkshar is a school located in Pamohi, Assam. It was started in 2016 and has around 100 students.

Akshar accepts plastic waste as fees instead of money.
 	This step has been taken by the school to protect the environment and make the surroundings plastic free.
 	The founders of this school are Parmita Sarma and Mazin Mukhtar.

The founders got this idea when they saw that plastic was being burnt by villagers, unaware of the harm caused by it.

Payment of 'fees' and recycling of waste

Students are asked to collect plastic waste from in and around their houses.
 	Students line up and “pay” for their classes with the plastic waste collected.
 	The plastic waste is collected and recycled into ecobricks* at the recycling centre in the school premises itself.

The school foundation has plans to open 100 such schools across India in the next 5 years.

*Ecobrick: It is a plastic bottle packed with plastic to be used as a strong reusable building block. Ecobricks are used to make many things such as furniture, walls, buildings, tree planters etc.
