Sugar heaps found in the ocean bed
Recommended for Middle Grades
In a recent study conducted by Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, scientists found heaps of sugar in the form of seagrass meadows across the world’s oceans.
Scientists said that those sugar heaps are equivalent to 32 billion cans of Coke. Ain’t it interesting?
What is seagrass meadow?
An underwater ecosystem formed by seagrasses is called a seagrass meadow.
What are seagrasses?
Seagrasses are marine plants found in shallow coastal waters.
Details of the new study
- Scientists have found heaps of sugar beneath seagrass meadows across the world’s oceans.
- It is because seagrass meadows are efficient at capturing carbon.
- The seagrass meadows are the world’s top carbon-capturing ecosystems.
- The researchers stated that one square kilometre of seagrass stores almost twice as much carbon as forests on land.
- Therefore, when the seabed around the meadows was inspected, they found massive amounts of sugar in their soil systems.
- Experts say that there are 0.6 and 1.3 million tons of sugar all over the world and it is mainly present in the form of sucrose.
- Seagrass meadows are amongst the most threatened habitats on Earth. According to the new study, these meadows are declining in all the oceans.
