Supreme Court rules no stay on CAA for now

Supreme Court rules no stay on CAA for nowToday, a three-judge bench of Supreme Court judges led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad A. Bobde heard pleas against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019.

144 petitions were listed before the Bench that also comprised Justices S. Abdul Nazeer and Sanjiv Khanna.
 	Advocates had urged the court to postpone the NPR (National Population Register) and the citizenship process for at least two months to avoid chaos.
 	The bench has said that there will be no stay on the CAA (no postponement of the CAA) or the NPR for now without hearing the centre's arguments.
 	It has referred the matter to a 5-judge constitutional bench, which will hear the cases as per a schedule. It also gave the central government four weeks to file its response.
 	The court also said that petitions from states such as Assam and Tripura would be heard separately although the common final decision will apply.
 	The Bench also issued notice on at least 80 more fresh petitions filed for and against the CAA.

Protests against the CAA, NRC (National Register of Citizens) and NPR continue all over India in many states.

A group of women held placards and staged a silent sit-in protest against the CAA outside the Supreme Court on the night of 21 January, as the Court was to have a hearing today.
 	Women also continue to lead the protests in Shaheen Bagh in Delhi, Pune and Uttar Pradesh, against the CAA.
 	Protests have also been organised in Kerala, Karnataka, Tripura, and more.
 	The Punjab government has also passed a resolution against the CAA and will move to the Supreme Court against it.
