Taiwan’s one-year mandatory military service!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

One year of mandatory military service has been added to Taiwan’s constitution. According to news reports the armed forces of Taiwan consist of more than one hundred thousand people. Of these 90% are volunteers and 10% are recruited soldiers doing their mandatory four months of service.

As a response to the increasing military, diplomatic, and economic pressure from China, the rule has been enforced by Taiwan.

The nation will increase the length of its mandatory military service from four months to a full year beginning in 2024.

Key facts!

  • Men born after 2005 will have to serve in the military longer.
  • This will start on January 1, 2024, for men born after 2005.
  • Those who were born before 2005 will still have to serve for four months.
  • But their training will be changed to help strengthen the island’s reserve forces.
  • Defence specialists feel that China’s estranged relations with Taiwan have intensified in recent years.
  • China continues to intimidate Taiwan by sending fighter planes and navy boats on a near-daily basis.
  • Taiwan is located in the Strait of Taiwan, which separates China and Taiwan.
  • In reaction to this, the armed forces of Taiwan actively track these movements.
  • This frequently acts as training for its own armed forces troops.
  • Taiwan believes that no one desires conflict, nonetheless, peace does not fall from the sky.
  • The extended compulsory military service plan lays the groundwork for Taiwan to increase its defensive capabilities.
  • The existing requirement that all citizens of Taiwan serve in the military for a period of four months has been disliked by the general public.
  • They feel that the duration is long and it would be extremely difficult to keep up with the necessary level of training.
  • Although the United States is Taiwan’s most important unofficial supporter, the two governments do not actually have diplomatic relations.
  • This is because Washington does not formally recognise Taiwan as a sovereign state.
  • Despite this, the United States is the island’s largest unofficial supporter.
