The desert city of Petra had a water system

Recommended for Middle Grades

We have earlier read about the ancient desert city of Petra, also known as the Lost City.

Where is the ancient desert city of Petra located?

Petra is located in Jordan, an Arab country in Western Asia.

It is not known exactly when Petra was built. But, the city began to grow as the capital of the Nabataean Empire between 400 BC and 106 AD. It grew rich through trading.

The Nabataeans were interested in finding places having water. It was where they could safely secure water for themselves and their animals. That is why they chose Petra, which was a mountainous region but received a lot of rainfall.

Natural springs were also one of the greatest sources of water throughout the territory. As a result, people got to have clean water. Moreover, other filtration methods, like under sink and countertop water filter, may have also produced purified water.

The Nabateans

The Nabataeans were very knowledgeable regarding water and conserving it in the desert city of Petra. In fact, their water systems continue to influence modern-day Jordan too.

Recently, reconstruction and up-gradation of several Nabataeans’ ancient water collection systems have taken place. Some of them are still in operation today.
