The Festival of Bhai Dooj

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Bhai Dooj is an important Hindu festival when women pray for the long and prosperous lives of their brothers.

  • It is celebrated on the 5th day of Diwali celebrations. As Diwali always falls on a new moon, Bhai Dooj is celebrated 2 days later.
  • ‘Bhai’ means brother while  ‘Dooj’ means the second day after the new moon.
  • It is very similar to Raksha Bandhan as it celebrates the love between brother and sister.
  • On this day, the sister puts a tilak on her brother’s forehead and offers him sweets. In return, the brother gives gifts to his sister.

As per Hindu mythology, it is said that on this day, Yamraj, the God of Death visited his twin sister Yami after a long time. Impressed by her warm welcome, Yamraj declared that if a brother greets his sister on this day, she would have a long life.

In another story, after Mahavir attained nirvana, his brother Raja Nandivardhan felt depressed and dejected due to his brother’s long absence. Nandivardhan was then comforted by their sister Sudarshana. Since then Bhai Dooj has been dedicated to the caring spirit of sisters.
