The festival of Losar (Tibetan New year)Apart from the regular New Year's day, we have seen many other new year's days like Ugadi, Navroz, Vaisakhi, Chinese New Year etc. Similarly, Losar is the Tibetan New Year's Day.

Losar is the start of the Tibetan year which is based on 12- month lunar calendar.

What is Losar?

Losar is a three-day festival celebrated mainly in India in Sikkim as well as Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan.
 	This year, Losar is being celebrated between 24 to 26 February.
 	The Tibetan calendar is used throughout the Himalayan region.
 	This year is the year of Iron Mouse of 2147 according to the Tibetan calendar.

How is Losar celebrated?

The last two days of the old year is called Gutor; this is when people start preparations for the New Year.

Day 1: The day is spent cleaning the house and a special soup and noodles called 'guthuk' is prepared.
 	Day 2: People visit the local monastery to worship and set off firecrackers.
 	Day 3: This day is the actual New Year's day and it includes family gatherings and exchange of gifts. They also prepare a special cake called 'kapse' and a drink called 'chang' on this day.
