The festival of Nowruz (Persian New Year)We have read about different New Year festivals such as the Chinese New Year and Losar. Similarly, Nowruz is the Persian New Year. Persia is the ancient name for Iran.

Nowruz is also celebrated in countries like Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Albania.

What is Nowruz?

It is an ancient festival marking the first day of spring.
 	Nowruz is a day for friends and neighbours from different communities to come together and celebrate.
 	It usually occurs around 21 March depending on where it is observed. This time, it falls on 20 March in India.
 	The UN has also officially declared its observance as the festival promotes peace and unity.

How do people celebrate Nowruz?

Nowruz means “new day”. It is the first day of the year according to the Persian calendar*.
 	People start getting ready for Nowruz about three weeks ahead by cleaning their houses thoroughly.
 	It's a celebration filled with parties, craft-making, street performances and public rituals.

This year, unfortunately, COVID-19 has hit the celebrations and people are advised to stay home without public gathering.
