NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins makes history by becoming the first African-American woman to participate in a long-term mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
She was part of a crew in orbit for a total of 170 days. Bob Hines, Kjell Lindgren, and Jessica Watkins were astronauts from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Key facts of the long-term ISS Mission!
- ISS welcomed back to Earth the fourth long-duration astronaut team that had been flown by SpaceX.
- The astronauts completed the fourth commercial mission of research to the ISS.
- The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule was given the name Freedom.
- On April 27, Freedom began its mission to remain in orbit.
- According to NASA, the crew was in orbit for a total of 170 days.
- The research looked at things like how microgravity changes human cells, and how nutrition changes in space affect the body.
- In addition to digestive health, and nutrition indicators.
- Aside from that, the crew also took part in research on how fire and fuel behave in space.
- As well as research on how to grow plants without soil, using ingredients that help them grow that are liquid or air-based.
- The work that the crew does in the orbiting laboratory will help prepare future explorers for trips to space.
