The invention of the telescope

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Let’s read today about the invention of the telescope. The telescope is an instrument that helps users to see objects that are far away. It is a very important tool in astronomy –  to study planets, stars, and other objects in outer space.

There are two main types of telescopes. The first type is the refracting telescope which uses lenses to magnify the image (make the image bigger).

The other type uses mirrors to focus the light of the image and form an image. These telescopes are called reflecting telescopes.

The history of the telescope

The invention of the telescope was an ongoing process. Several people first started making simple refracting telescopes starting from the early 17th century. In 1609, the Italian scientist Galileo improved the design of this type of telescope.

Then, later, several inventors also built reflecting telescopes, including English scientist Isaac Newton.

An American astronomer built the first radio telescope in 1937. After that, other scientific telescopes were developed along with spacecraft. Scientists began launching such spacecraft in the 1950s.

The most famous telescope in the world today is the Hubble Space Telescope. This telescope was launched in 1990.

Such space telescopes today make it possible to take amazing pictures of faraway stars and galaxies.
