The Mesoamerican roots of Black Panther’s Namor!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

In the Marvel movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Tenoch Huerta plays the role of Namor. Namor is neither a simple good guy nor a simple bad guy. He is the leader of Atlantis, which is an underwater country.

He is half human and half sea creature. One of the first characters made by the entertainment corporation was the underwater antihero.

Namor has teamed up with and fought against a number of Marvel’s most famous superheroes, from Captain America to  Black Panther.

Now, he’s making his live-action debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2018 movie Black Panther.

Namor is very strong in the water and on land, and he can also fly, which makes him a very dangerous opponent. Namor is in charge of Talokan, an underwater civilization with influences of Mesoamerica. The small kingdom of Talokan is known for being secretive and strong.

Key facts!

  • An archaeologist who specialises in Mesoamerican cultures says that Namor has always been shown in different ways.
  • Mesoamerican culture is a big part of Wakanda Forever.
  • Mesoamerica is an old area that includes modern-day Mexico, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.
  • Indigenous peoples from Mesoamerica include the Maya, the Aztecs, and the Toltecs.
  • Namor’s kingdom is called Talokan.
  • As per experts, most likely this name comes from the Aztec paradise where the rain god Tlloc lived.
  • Namor also gets a new look, with points on his ears, wings on his ankles, and tight shorts.
  • Namor wore a series of beautiful feathered headdresses that were made by an international award-winning costume designer.
  • They got ideas from all of the ceremonies in Mesoamerican history.
  • On some vases, they painted pictures of people in different clothes and headdresses.
  • The most interesting thing about Namor’s headpiece is that it refers to a name that his people gave him.
