The nose and ears are our only body parts that don’t stop growing

Recommended for Middle Grades

Our body parts

As we grow older, we can see that our nose becomes bigger or our earlobes look longer than they did when we were younger. While this happens, the rest of our body gets smaller as we grow older.

This is because the nose and ears are made of cartilage (with some soft tissue too in the nose). Cartilage is a flexible tissue that’s harder than the skin but it is softer than bone.

Over our lifetime, the skin gets thinner and slowly stops giving much support to the skin on top of it. The skin 0f our body also loses elasticity and firmness, and it tends to get loose. Loose skin over an older cartilage frame makes the ears and noses longer.

Other body parts

We also find that the rest of our face changes, leading to an emphasis on our nose or ears. If our cheeks and lips appear thinner than usual, our noses look bigger in comparison.

If we were to measure the outer ear of a newborn baby, we will find that it’s larger than its head in proportion to his or her body. Ears will continue to grow longer throughout our lives. However, this development does start to slow down when the child turns 8 to 10 years of age. Once a person turns 85 years of age, the ears reach their highest average length.
