The UAE’s Hope mission to Mars is a success

The United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) first mission to Marsthe Hope Probe, arrived at Mars on Tuesday.

This marks the UAE as only the fifth country and the only Arab country in history to reach the red planet.

The Hope Probe sent back a signal confirming that it’s in orbit. This means it ensured that Mars’ gravity could capture it. Otherwise, it would not be able to go around it and instead, Mars’ orbit could have flung it into deep space.

The probe, together with its three scientific instruments, will study Mars’ atmosphere.

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world was glowing red in honour of the Martian mission on Tuesday night.

The Hope mission was one of three that launched to Mars from Earth in July  2020  – the other two being NASA’s Perseverance rover and China’s Tianwen-1 mission.

Tianwen-1 is expected to arrive on 10 February. It will first orbit the planet and then a rover will land on it after a few months. Perseverance will land its rover on Mars on 18 February.
