The US celebrates the festival of Thanksgiving

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year and this year, that date is 25 November. It is sometimes called American Thanksgiving (outside the US) as other countries such as Canada also have the festival but on different dates.

This festival marks the day when people of the US celebrate the harvest and other blessings of the previous year. Families gather together to be thankful for what they have and have a feast. The feast often involves eating roast turkey, pumpkin pies, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce.

Tha day is considered one of the busiest holidays in the US. The next day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday. This is a day of crazy shopping and sales. The festival also signals that the holiday season is starting as later, Christmas and New Year will follow.

Traditions of the day

Every year on this day, the current President of the US pardons the Thanksgiving turkey. Moreover, on this day, New York City also hosts the world’s largest Thanksgiving parade known as ‘Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This parade has marching bands and giant cartoon balloons. This year, the parade was back in action after it was cancelled for 2 years due to the pandemic.

Thanksgiving represents the first Thanksgiving feast that was shared between colonists who came to America and the native Wampanoag Indians in Massachusetts.
