The world’s first ever remote-controlled submersible fish farmNorway is looking for new ways to increase the production of salmon in a sustainable way, without causing more strain on energy resources.

To work towards this aim, Norwegian company Arctic Offshore Farming has asked ABB (ASEA Brown Boveri) a European engineering and technology company, to build the world’s first remote-controlled submersible* salmon farm.

The farm is located in the Norwegian Sea.

The farm will operate fish pens (a closed space in the water made of netting which keeps the salmon in and unwanted creatures out) by remote-control, thus saving fuel and electricity. This will make them more sustainable.
 	The underwater fish farm will also protect the salmon from threats such as sea parasites.
 	ABB will design the control and monitoring systems to enable the pens to be operated from a distance as well as keep them safe from harsh weather.
 	The farm will also be used to collect data related to weather conditions, ocean currents, oxygen levels, sea temperature, etc.

The farm will be completed by the second half of 2020.
