An Australian moth so heavy, it can’t fly
What are moths?
Moths are a type of insects that look like butterflies but are not as colourful. Most moths are active at night. You can see them flying near anything bright, like light bulbs or the TV screen.
Recently, a moth was found in a school building in Australia. What is so special about it? It was so big and heavy that it couldn’t fly! The moth was about as big as a rat.
This Australian moth is called the giant wood moth. It is the heaviest moth in the world. However, the Australian moth found (above) is heavier than normal. Giant wood moths are found near the seaside in parts of Australia. Female giant wood moths are much bigger than males. These moths also live only for days.
While other animals have been discovered in the school before, it’s the first time they have seen this moth. The students were asked to write stories about this amazing Australian moth.
