Nigerian musician Chukwuka Ekweani is better known by his stage as CKay. In Bengaluru,  he mesmerised the crowd with his tunes that are at the top of the charts.

He also discussed his love for Indian cinema and his popular song “Love Nwantiti.” The song went viral on TikTok. Importantly, it marked a key moment for African pop music.

Key facts!

  • Firstly, African pop music is a genre that has influenced a large number of well-known musicians.
  • However, it has not yet achieved global commercial success until now.
  • “Love Nwantiti” holds the distinction of being the first from the African continent to secure the top spot on YouTube’s most-watched music videos list.
  • Ckay believes that the song’s appeal in India is a significant part of that success.
  • He doesn’t speak Hindi or any other Indian language, but the song hit number one in India for a few months.
  • Thus it was quite exciting for him even though he doesn’t understand the language.
  • So, he is thankful for the love shown to him by Indian fans.
  • The fact that CKay is of Nigerian descent has also been an important influence on his musical style.
    • He produces songs in his native language “Igbo”, which is largely spoken in the southeastern region of Nigeria.
    • Ckay’s music is inspired by the people, places, and his personal life experiences.
  • He then went on to say that “Kuchi Kuchi Kota Hai” was his favourite Indian song.
    • In spite of the slight blunder, it was evident that he was passionate about Bollywood movies.
  • Ckay also expressed that in Nigeria people are hysterical about watching Bollywood movies.
  • Despite the fact that they don’t comprehend the language, they continue to watch it.
  • He praised Indian films for their cultural genuineness and effective narratives.
    • Both of these, in his opinion, strike a chord with moviegoers in their native countries.
